Starter Orthodontic Kit

Written & reviewed by the Equate Technical Team · Updated

An orthodontic starter kit is a pre-assembled set of the instruments needed to start a fixed-appliance or aligner practice: wire and band pliers, a cutter, ligature and positioning instruments, gauges and mirrors. It lets a new clinic equip a chair in one purchase rather than sourcing each instrument separately.

What a starter kit is for

A new orthodontic chair needs a working minimum: something to place and remove archwires, something to cut them, something to seat bands and bond brackets in the right position, and something to measure. Starter kits package those instruments so the practice does not have to decide on every single item at once. They also standardise the tray so assistants learn one layout.

A kit is a starting point rather than a finished instrument collection. Clinicians typically add specialised pliers and a second set as case volume grows. Which kit suits a practice depends mainly on whether the work is fixed appliances, aligners or both.

The 17-piece orthodontic instrument kit

The Orthodontic Instrument Kit of 17 with Mirror, Pliers and Gauges is described as a ready-to-run starter set for arch-wire, band and bracket work. Its contents are listed in the table below.

The plier line includes long Weingart pliers with tungsten carbide inserts, a long posterior band remover, a bird-beak plier rated to 0.028 in. wire, a direct-bond bracket remover, a tungsten carbide hard wire cutter and a safety-hold tungsten carbide distal end cutter. The kit is autoclavable and supplied non-sterile.

The 5-piece clear aligner plier kit

The Clear Aligner Plier Kit of 5 supports in-office aligner adjustments. It gathers a 6 mm hole punch for attaching elastics or engaging buttons, a tear-drop plier for creating retention dimples, a horizontal plier for lateral pressure points, a vertical plier for occlusal-apical corrections and a dimpling plier for surface-level activations.

A 10 mm hollow-handle ligature director accompanies the pliers for handling elastic ties and placing attachments. Each instrument is forged from surgical stainless steel with box-lock hinges, and the set is supplied non-sterile in a lined presentation box.

Choosing between the kits

  • Fixed-appliance start-up: the 17-piece kit covers wire, band, bracket, ligature, measuring and examination in one set.
  • Aligner-focused practice: the 5-piece kit covers hole, dimple and pressure-point adjustments that fixed-appliance sets do not.
  • Mixed practice: the two kits do not overlap in pliers, apart from the ligature director in each, so they can be bought together.
  • Check the sterilisation route: both are autoclavable but supplied non-sterile and need processing before first use.

What a starter kit does not replace

A single 17-piece set cannot serve a full day of appointments if every chair needs its own sterile tray. Plan for multiple sets or a processing turnaround. Specialised loop-forming, torquing or step-bend pliers are not in this kit and are usually bought once wire bending becomes routine. See the guide to essential pliers for a new orthodontist for the order in which those are usually added.

The Equate difference

Equate lists 2 starter kits: a 17-piece Orthodontic Instrument Kit with mirror, pliers and gauges (EI-2988) and a Clear Aligner Plier Kit of 5 with Ligature Director (EI-2989), both in passivated stainless steel.

Frequently asked questions

What should an orthodontic starter kit include?

Archwire pliers, a cutter, band and bracket instruments, ligature tools, measuring gauges and mirrors, or for aligner work, hole, dimple and pressure-point pliers.

What is in the Equate 17-piece orthodontic kit?

Long Weingart pliers, a posterior band remover, bird-beak plier, bracket remover, TC hard wire cutter, safety-hold TC distal end cutter, Mathieu, Mershon band pusher, ligature director, explorer, band seater, bracket positioning gauge, height measurer, Castroviejo caliper, positioning tweezer and two mirrors.

What is in the clear aligner plier kit?

A 6 mm hole punch, tear-drop, horizontal, vertical and dimpling pliers, plus a 10 mm hollow-handle ligature director.

Are the kits sterile?

No. Both are supplied non-sterile and are autoclavable, so process them before first use.

Is a kit cheaper than buying instruments separately?

That depends on the instruments chosen; the main advantage of a kit is a ready, standardised tray rather than a guaranteed saving.

Do I need both kits?

Only if you offer both fixed appliances and aligners. The 17-piece kit suits fixed appliances; the 5-piece kit suits aligner adjustments.
