Building an Orthodontic Plier Starter Kit

Written & reviewed by the Equate Technical Team · Updated

A starter plier kit needs five instruments to run a fixed-appliance archwire change: a Weingart plier, a safety-hold distal end cutter, a ligature cutter, a ligature director and a utility plier. Add bird beak, band removing and debonding pliers in stage two. Buy in stages, not all at once.

Our ranked picks

  1. 1. Core archwire-change set: Weingart, safety-hold distal end cutter, ligature cutter, ligature director

These four are used at every archwire change, so they pay back first. Buy two Weingarts and two cutters per operatory if you have sterilisation turnover. Not enough for banded appliances or debonding on their own.

See Distal End Cutter with Safety Hold 0.56 x 0.71 mm (.022″ x .028″ Wire, TC)
  2. 2. Utility (Howe) and bird beak pliers

General gripping and basic bending, so adjustments and first appliances become possible. Buy these once the core set is in use. Not needed on day one if you only place pre-formed archwires.

See How Utility Plier 3.2mm Max 0.028 Inch Wire
  3. 3. Debonding set: bracket remover, band removing plier

Needed at the end of treatment, so buy before your first debond date, not before your first bonding day.

See Direct Bond Bracket Remover Plier
  4. 4. Hard wire cutter and loop or arch forming pliers

For removal wire cutting and custom bends. Defer until you do custom wire work.

See Hard Wire Cutter Plier 15 Degree Tungsten-Carbide Max 0.028 Inch Wire
  5. 5. Aligner plier set

Only for practices that treat with aligners. The kit of 5 with a ligature director covers punch, tear drop and rectangular work in one purchase.

Why buy in stages

A common error is buying every plier in one order. Instruments you use daily wear out first, so quality matters most there, while specialist pliers may sit in a drawer for months. Our broader guides cover the long list: the best orthodontic pliers and the essential pliers for a new orthodontist. This page is about sequence and budget, not repeating those lists.

How we built this list

Dated 21 October 2026. Written by Equate, which makes the instruments named, and so it reflects our assessment of what typical fixed-appliance workflows need, not a survey of practices or a controlled study. Practices differ by technique, bracket system and whether they treat with aligners. We found no published standard for the contents of an orthodontic starter set, so this is editorial judgement. Prices quoted here are indicative EUR ex-VAT list prices.

Keeping the first set in service

Clean, lubricate and heat-sterilise instruments to the maker's instructions, using the 2003 CDC dental guideline as the infection control baseline. Rotate duplicates so wear is spread. Replace a plier when tips misalign or a cutter crushes wire.

The Equate difference

Equate offers two starter kits at an indicative €229 list: an 'Orthodontic Instrument Kit of 17 with Mirror, Pliers, and Gauges' and a 'Clear Aligner Plier Kit of 5 with Ligature Director', alongside singles such as 19 Weingart pliers, 28 distal end cutters and 17 ligature cutters.
