Ligature Tucker
Written & reviewed by the Equate Technical Team · Updated
A ligature tucker is a slim double-ended hand instrument used to tuck the cut ends of stainless steel ligature wire under the archwire, away from the cheek and lips, and to seat the archwire into bracket slots. One end is typically angled for tucking, the other a thin straight probe.
Why tucking matters
After a steel ligature is twisted around a bracket and cut, a short pigtail remains. Left upright, it can irritate the cheek and lip, so it is bent down and tucked beneath the archwire. The tucker is the instrument built for this: its angled tip engages the pigtail and pushes it into the interproximal space or under the wire without disturbing the ligature.
Stainless steel ligatures remain in use because of their secure retention. In vitro data may not match the mouth, but the result helps explain why steel ties remain popular for sliding mechanics, and each tied ligature leaves a pigtail to tuck.
Other jobs for a tucker
- Seating an archwire fully into the slot at the end of the appointment.
- Folding a distal wire end flat at the molar tube (distal end tucker and bender patterns).
- Handling elastomeric modules and fine auxiliaries.
- Checking that ligature ends are fully tucked before the patient leaves.
Equate tucker patterns
| Pattern | Equate example | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Ligature tucker | Ortho Ligature Tucker | Tucking pigtails; angled tip plus straight probe |
| Archwire tucker | Ortho Archwire Tucker | Seating wire in slots |
| Distal end tucker and bender | 0.55/0.22 to 0.75/0.30 mm | Folding down distal wire ends at the tube |
| Utility instrument | Ligature Utility Instrument 17.5 cm | Hollow handle, general ligature work |
| Combined director and tucker | Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, 6 mm solid handle | Two functions in one instrument |
| Placing / tying forceps | Ligature Placing Forceps 14 cm; Coon Ligature Tying Forceps | Placing ties with a gripping action |
Choosing a tucker
A fine angled tip tucks more cleanly between tight contacts, but a tip that is too thin can bend under load. Silicone-sleeved hollow handles give light, tactile control; solid metal handles are slim and tough.
If you ligate with steel only occasionally, a combined director and tucker covers both tasks with one instrument.
Care
Equate tuckers are passivated stainless steel, ultrasonically cleaned, latex free, reusable and supplied non-sterile; clean and sterilise before first use. Because the tip must stay fine, keep it from contact with other instruments in cassettes, and inspect it for bends at each cycle.
The Equate difference
Equate lists 10 ligature tuckers, including the Ortho Ligature Tucker, an Ortho Archwire Tucker, a distal end tucker and bender (0.55/0.22 to 0.75/0.30 mm), a 17.5 cm utility instrument and combined Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 ligature director and tuckers.

Frequently asked questions
What is a ligature tucker used for?
It tucks the cut ends of stainless steel ligature wire under the archwire so the ends do not irritate the cheek or lips, and it can seat archwires into slots.
What is the difference between a ligature tucker and director?
A director guides ligatures into position; a tucker is shaped to push cut ends under the archwire. Combined instruments do both.
Do I need a tucker with elastomeric ties?
Not for tucking, since elastomeric ties leave no wire ends, but a tucker is still useful for seating wire.
What is a distal end tucker?
A tucker and bender used to fold down the end of an archwire at the molar tube so it does not protrude.
Can one instrument tuck and direct?
Yes. Combined ligature director and tucker instruments, such as the Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 patterns, cover both tasks.
